There are always high stakes to play for in the world of gambling, but it’s a world 15 year-old Holly Maddon knows nothing about until her step-mother tries to kill her. The race is on as she tries to discover what her step-mother is up to and whether her father was murdered. She comes up against gangsters, multi-million pound land deals, treachery and deceit, she’s kidnapped, shot at and loses just about everything she loves – it’s a rollercoaster of a ride and Holly's intent on turning the tables.
Unlucky Dip Kate Tenbeth Elizabeth Eisen Books
Unlucky Dip by Kate Tenbeth is nothing like the Burly and Grim series she also writes. It is more for the young adult audience that begins with attempted murder.Holly is celebrating her 15th birthday on a riverboat during a cold December night when her stepmother Sylvia chucks her over the railing into the Thames. After an intensive search, it’s feared that Holly may be dead. Some feign sadness (Sylvia) while others are devastated like Holly’s best girl friend, Georgie. As Detective Inspector Drummond takes on the case, Sylvia’s plan of an “accidental” death scheme may not be so brilliant after all.
Unbeknown to her stepmother, the detective, or the city, a young man named Jon has fished Holly out of the river and is nursing her back to health. They also don’t know that Holly has chosen to stay hidden as she pieces things together to take Sylvia down. This may not be the first time Sylvia has killed.
I enjoyed this quick read. The reader already knows the who, what, and when. We just have to follow Holly into the why and how to prove it.
Holly is a pretty resilient character. She is practical and handles her attempted murder as well as can be expected. She doesn’t go down easily and doesn’t fall apart. Jon is an enjoyable character. He keeps everything light as he and Holly delve deeper into Sylvia’s treachery. Detective Inspector Drummond is persistent and an unlikely softy when it comes to the people involved in his cases. But he is no pushover and justice will be served one way or another.
The plot is pretty transparent. Pieces are revealed to us fairly consistently. We’re just along for the ride wondering how Holly will prove any of her findings and if anyone will believe her. I thought Sylvia’s round about scheme was pointless once everything is revealed. It could have been stronger.
The ending is appropriate with only a few details that seemed far-fetched.
I recommend Unlucky Dip for a quick read with a bit of mystery and murder.

Unlucky Dip Kate Tenbeth Elizabeth Eisen Books Reviews
`UNLUCKY DIP'
By Kate Tenbeth
This is one of the most delightful books that I have read for some time. Stemming from the attempted murder of a teenage girl, the novel grips from the very beginning as, with the help of friends, the motive for this near tragedy is slowly unravelled. Through the twists and turns of a complex plot and sub plots the novel moves to a conclusion towards which the reader is kept guessing until near the very end.
Most remarkably, the novel demonstrates the latent (and frequently misunderstood) impatient adolescent honesty and determination to get to the simplistic truth of matters - which is often impeded in the complex world of adults. This youthful fortitude is ultimately triumphant and demonstrates the Author's perceptive understanding of teenagers who are often so derided both by `authority', and the media. Throughout, there are ample lacings of humour which balances the grimmer reality of the quite evil forces which they are all up against. Thankfully, the Police are both sympathetic and understanding, especially when some of the teenage activities are, in themselves, questionably legal !
All in all, `Unlucky Dip' is a most enjoyable, albeit dangerous, romp and is ultimately, a `feel-good' tale not to be missed. I thoroughly recommend it !

Unlucky Dip
There are always high stakes to play for in the world of gambling, but it's a world 15 year-old Holly Maddon knows nothing about until her step-mother tries to kill her.
This book grabs your attention right from the start, and from the moment Holly was thrown overboard I was gripped - I just had to carry on reading to see what was going to happen next.
Well written, with great character development, this book is easy to read and will keep you turning the pages through all of the adventure.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I received the book free to read and review from Library Thing. The book's plot revolves around a fifteen-year old girl who owns valuable land, though she does not realize she owns it or its worth, and the treachery used to get the land away from her so the perpetrators can profit from its sale. It begins with Holly Madden pushed off a boat into the Thames River by her step-mother. Jon, who lives nearby, rescues her, unbeknownst to most, and becomes a faithful companion as she endeavors to figure out what is going on and why people want to kill her. They pass through numerous dangerous but interesting episodes to uncover the truth behind this mystery. Even though both Holly and Jon, and later her friend Georgie, are teenagers, they unravel the clues in the mystery as well as or even better than the local detectives who are on the case looking for the missing Holly. The author manages to keep their sleuthing well within the bounds of that you would expect from teenagers, which makes the story all the more realistic. All the characters are well developed and interesting. The book held my interest almost from the first page. By the time I had reached the ending, I had only one wish--that the story could go on and on. I am glad I have found one more author whose books I will read and enjoy.
A very clever tale, with lots of twists and turns. Starting with Holly being thrown overboard on a birthday cruise, who rescues her and what she finds out about life.
Being rescued from the Thames by a stranger and brought back to life is just the beginning of this roller coaster adventure ride.
